Discovery Activity

Chemical Mysteries

1. Dip a toothpick into a small dish of milk. Use the toothpick as a penny to write a
message on a sheet of white paper.
2. Let the milk dry. Observe what happens to your message as it dries.

3. Hold the paper close to a light bulb that is lit.
How does your message change before and after you palce it next to the light
bulb? What can you say about the relationship between the milk and the light bulb?
4. Fill one container about half full with very cold water and another container
about half full with hot water.
5. Place four or five drips of food coloring into each container at exactly the same
time.
Compare the rates at which the colors spread.
